Reflection & Evaluation in COIL Projects

In the final phase of a COIL project, students come together, present, and reflect on their results. They look back on their academic insights as well as the experience of international collaboration, making their joint achievements visible. At the same time, instructors evaluate the project academically, organizationally, and interculturally. This phase is essential for ensuring lasting learning outcomes and provides valuable input for improving future COIL initiatives.

In a nutshell

The final stage of a COIL project focuses on analysing the entire learning and collaboration process. It marks the transition from experience to conscious learning and creates a foundation for long-term development.

Key aims of this phase include:

    • Assessing academic outcomes: How well were the learning objectives achieved? Which competencies were strengthened or developed?
    • Reflecting on international collaboration: What worked well in the intercultural group? Where did challenges arise? How were they dealt with?
    • Strengthening student self-reflection: What role did I take in the group? What would I do differently next time?
    • Making collaboration results visible: Presenting outcomes, products, findings, or creative work and appreciating the groups’ efforts.
    • Gathering feedback for instructors: What forms of support were helpful? Where was additional guidance needed?
    • Identifying improvement areas for future COILs: Adjusting processes, refining tools, and adapting timelines.

    Step 1: Final Presentations

A COIL project typically concludes with a visible output that reflects the students’ international collaboration. Final presentations create a shared space where teams present their findings, learn from each other, and highlight diverse academic and cultural perspectives. They also offer instructors valuable insight into group dynamics, problem-solving approaches, and learning progress. It is therefore important to plan it carefully and to communicate expectations clearly.

    Possible formats:

    • What knowledge, skills, or perspectives should students gain?
    • Live online presentations (Zoom, Teams, etc.)
    • Digital poster sessions
    • Short videos or podcasts
    • Rotating “marketplace” in breakout rooms

    Tip

Communicate presentation guidelines and assessment criteria in advance.

    Step 2: Student Reflection

Encouraging reflection is crucial for deepening both subject-specific learning and skills related to teamwork and intercultural communication. Many students only realise what they have learned through guided reflection. This stage helps them process their experience and transfer insights to future projects. Well-designed reflection formats strengthen self-efficacy, cultural awareness, and the ability to analyse and improve group processes.

    Reflection formats:

    • Individual: learning journals, short essays, audio reflections
    • Group: shared reflection sheets, peer feedback
    • Meta-reflection: “What do I take away for future international projects?”

    Helpful guiding questions:

    • What did I learn academically?
    • What worked well in the collaboration, and what didn’t?
    • How did I experience intercultural or linguistic differences?
    • Which competencies did I develop?

Step 3: Evaluation of the COIL Project

For instructors, the COIL journey does not end with student presentations. Evaluation allows the project to be viewed holistically: What worked well? What should be adjusted next time? Student feedback and a joint debriefing between partner instructors provide valuable insights. The results of this evaluation strengthen long-term quality development and support future COIL collaborations.

    Components of evaluation:

    • Short anonymous student survey
    • Joint debriefing among instructors
    • Comparison of planned vs. achieved learning outcomes
    • Review of technical and organisational challenges

    Tip

Document evaluation results to inform future COIL iterations.
